Real Talk: How Caregivers Actually Use Their Time Off

Work-life balance isn’t just important, it’s essential. That is especially true for caregivers. After long shifts, emotional demands, and constant movement, time off becomes more than a break, it’s a chance to reset, recharge, and reconnect. But how do caregivers actually spend that time?
We looked to caregivers for the answers and discovered that they are as diverse as the caregivers themselves. From rest and hobbies to travel and personal growth, they’re making the most of every moment off the clock. If you’re looking for fresh ideas to recharge or just want reassurance that your time off is yours to own we’ve got tips to help you make it count.
1. Rest
Caregivers spend so much time taking care of others that it’s necessary to also take care of themselves. When they get much deserved time off, a lot like to stay at home to unwind. This form of self-care can look different for everyone. It could look like catching up on your favorite TV show, reading a book, or treating yourself to other relaxing activities such as getting a massage.
Tip: Set a clear boundary for your rest time by turning off notifications, setting your phone to “Do Not Disturb,” and letting friends or family know you’re unavailable. Protecting your downtime ensures your rest is truly restorative.
2. Exploring
One of the best perks of the job is taking an assignment in a new place and getting to experience what your city has to offer. That’s why several caregivers choose to explore and travel around the area where they are on assignment. Trying new restaurants, going on hikes to see the scenery, checking out the local shops, or checking out the entertainment in the area like concerts and sporting events.
Tip: Pick one local “hidden gem” each week. It can be a coffee shop, trail, museum, or event and make it part of your routine. Use apps like Atlas Obscura or ask locals for their favorite off-the-beaten-path spots to discover places you wouldn’t find in a typical travel guide.
4. Hobbies
Another thing caregivers do in their free time is taking part in hobbies. Time off is the perfect way to attend one of your favorite classes, go to the gym, work on a craft that you haven’t had time to finish, writing that book, or tackling some DIY projects around the house. Maybe there’s also a personal skill you’re trying to develop such as archery.
Tip: Choose a hobby that not only brings you joy but also helps you grow—mentally, physically, or emotionally. Whether it’s joining a local pottery studio, learning guitar through an app, or taking a language class, make it something that feeds your curiosity and keeps your mind active.
5. Professional Development
Some caregivers prefer to keep up the pace and spend their time off continuing professional development. This is achieved by attending conferences, seminars, and networking events with other caregivers or leaders. Some even take classes or workshops to enhance their skillset.
Tip: Set one professional development goal for each assignment. Whether it’s earning a certification, improving a soft skill like communication, or connecting with a mentor. Then find a course, webinar, or event that aligns with that goal to make your time off both purposeful and manageable.
6. Connection
One of the best ways to recharge is to connect with friends and loved ones. A number of caregivers choose to spend their time off by catching up or seeing an old friend. Others seek connection by spending intentional time with family members, either traveling to them or staying local. Connection and community is essential to our human nature.
Tip: Be intentional and plan a no-distraction “quality time” moment, like a tech-free dinner, a shared hobby, or a scenic walk with someone you care about. Focus on being fully present to strengthen your bond and recharge emotionally.
How do you choose to spend your time off? Whether you’re resting, exploring, learning, or reconnecting, remember this: your time off is earned, and you don’t owe anyone an explanation for how you recharge. You deserve it.
